how to draw 3d in autocad lt 2014

By Mark Lancaster, Synergis Applied science Design Solutions

Have y'all ever contacted a vendor requesting a 3D model of their product and you only received a second drawing of it? I will even bet the drawing yous received had limited amount of information on information technology likewise. So what steps did y'all have to catechumen their 2d cartoon over to 3D?

Granted there are a few workflows out there to take 2D geometry and make a 3D model from information technology, merely with the release of Inventor 2016, information technology but got easier. For example, let's say yous just accept access to a 2D drawing file of a stainless steel barbed connector from McMASTER-CARR

Image1

Get-go allow'due south start out by creating a new role in Inventor 2016. For my configuration, no new sketch is created when I start making a part.

  • Next, select Import located under the 3D Model/Create ribbon section

Image2

  • Navigate to and select (open up) my second cartoon
    • At this indicate the drawing you're importing should be placed somewhere in the active Inventor projection area.
  • Select on of the work planes to place the drawing
  • Select the bespeak (origin or 0,0) where the cartoon will exist inserted.
    • This indicate will lucifer the (0,0) location on the drawing
  • Accept the message most the file not being saved and/or about the associated underlay that's being created.

Image3

  • The cartoon should at present appear on the work plane you lot selected earlier

Image4

  • At this signal the drawing may be inserted at the incorrect orientation and/or incorrect scale.
    • For the scaling aspect, I will embrace that before long.
  • To reorient (if needed), right mouse click on the drawing in the browser and select Translate. From at that place I can use the rotate triad method and turn my drawing xc degrees.

Image5 Image6

  • Create a 2nd sketch on the same work plane that was used when importing the drawing.

Image7

  • Now we demand to get-go projecting the drawing geometry that will make up our sketch. Select the drop down nether Project Geometry and choice Projection DWG Geometry

Image8

  • Since I planned on making a revolved extrusion of this part, I will only projection a sure amount of the 2D geometry. I'one thousand too projecting the ends of the connector as construction lines in social club to decide my axis of rotation.

Image9

  • Next I will cease up my sketch past creating the missing geometry that will course the revolved extrusion.

Image10

  • Now let's revolve it and salvage the part file.

Image11

  • If I bank check the overall length of my revolved extrusion, you lot will notice the scale of the imported drawing is not at a 1 to ane calibration. In order to change the cartoon scale I will need to open the 2D drawing file directly in one of the AutoCAD platforms.

Image12

Although I'chiliad using AutoCAD 2016, the drawing can exist modified in any version of AutoCAD as long as information technology's able to open it.

  • I'll scale the cartoon based on the origin (0,0) point and the other thing I will do is move the unabridged cartoon and so one of the connector ends is setting at the drawing origin point.

Image13

  • Save the drawing and exit AutoCAD.
  • Now when I return back to Inventor, a red lightning commodities is present next to the (imported) drawing in the browser and the update icon is lit.

Image14

  • Once I perform the update, the model is scaled downwardly based on the updated drawing and the stop of the office relocated and aligns with the origin plane/point.

Image15

  • After a couple of additional modeling steps my barb connector is now completed.

Image16

  • At this signal I could turn the visibility of the cartoon off and/or suppress (or suspension) the link to the (imported) drawing.

In that location you take information technology, a workflow that allows you to take second geometry and a 3D part from it. Until next fourth dimension…
